Read this topic to learn about hardware, software, and infrastructure requirements for running Skype for Business on a Mac.
Microsoft Skype for Business is a unified communications tool for Cornell faculty, staff, and students. It provides instant messaging presence (a combination of your availability and willingness to communicate; helps users approach their colleagues at the right time and through the right form of communication). Hi everyone, We’re excited to announce that Skype for Business Mac is now available to public. We have a collection of great training topics that help you quickly connect with co-workers and business. I've got a user who is trying to make calls using skype for business on a MacBook but when they do, the mic doesn't seem to be working. All of the audio settings are turned up full on the skype settings and the strange things is that in the system preferences I can see that the mic is picking up sound and working fine.
The Skype for Business on Mac Client is available for download.
When Skype for Business on Mac tries to join a meeting, the client passes the meeting URL to Unified Communications Web API (UCWA). In some cases, there can be additional parameters in the URL that are not recognized by Skype for Business Server.

The Skype for Business on Mac client leverages both the Unified Communications Management Platform (UCMP) as well as the Unified Communications Web API (UCWA) that our mobility clients use.
The client has the same requirements as our mobility clients in that you must have an Access Edge Server and Reverse Proxy deployed in a supported configuration.
Authentication
The Skype for Business on Mac client supports Cert-based authentication, Microsoft Modern Authentication, and Multi-Factor Authentication when deployed and enabled.
Note
Due to a current limitation, the user's Exchange credentials must be the same as their Skype for Business credentials.
Certificates
Certificates in use on the Access Edge, Reverse Proxy and Front End servers must not use the SHA-512 hash algorithm.
The HTTP Certificate Revocation List must be defined and accessible by the client. For example, we don't support an LDAP entry in the certificate as your Certificate Revocation List.
DNS
Mobility must be properly deployed for the Skype for Business on the Mac client to function properly. A common failure scenario is to have both of the following DNS entries resolvable on the internal network:
- lyncdiscoverinternal.<sipdomain> Ms office for mac reviews.
- https://brownengineering598.weebly.com/moving-wallpapers-for-mac.html. lyncdiscover.<sipdomain>
For more information, refer to: Deploying Mobility in Lync Server 2013, and the Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Mobility Guide.

Skype for Mac comes closer to achieving parity with its predecessor (Lync), but still does not have all the features of Skype for Business for Windows. We've listed the significant differences below. You may want to look at our Comparison Chart of Web and Video Conferencing to see if Zoom is a better fit for your needs.

Microsoft is aware of these issues but has not announced a timeframe for resolving them.
When using Skype for Business for Mac,
Download Skype For Business
- Only people who are on your Contacts list can reach you via instant messaging, voice, or video call. There is a workaround, which involves you logging into Skype on a Windows computer. These steps will not work in Skype for Mac.
- Click the gear icon, then Tools, then Options.
- In the left column of the Options dialog box, click Status.
- On the right, select I want everyone to be able to see my presence.
- Click OK. Now all Skype users can contact you, whether they are in your Contacts list or not.
- When searching for people, Skype for Mac will only show people with accounts in Cornell's Active Directory. Search will not show anyone with a non-Cornell address.
- The Presence feature does not pull your status from Outlook Calendar. (With Windows, Skype will show you as free, busy, in a meeting, etc. based on events on your calendar.) You can update your presence manually.
